Lilliput Lane York Minster
England’s largest medieval cathedral and Yorkshire’s most important historic and most-visited building, York Minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the second highest office of the Church of England. Its formal name is The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York, and Minster refers back to Anglo Saxon times, when it was a title given to missionary teaching churches.

York’s first Minster was a wooden church built for the baptism of the Anglo Saxon King, Edwin of Northumbria 627, which was then quickly rebuilt in stone and expanded over time, until the Norman invasion of York in 1069, when it was damaged by fire. The Saxon Minster was eventually replaced with a new Norman one, on a different site and it is this one which was to evolve over time into the Minster we see today.

Northern Europe’s greatest gothic cathedral, with the world’s largest single expanse of medieval stained glass.
